Sedus to award the winning entries of the “Mobile Communication” design competition in cooperation with the European Design Institute IED at the stand at the EIMU during the International Office Furniture Trade Fair in Milan from 5 to 10 April 2006

In the 2005/2006 winter semester, Sedus, along with the European Design Institute, launched a design competition.

The theme of the competition, aimed at final year students of the prestigious institute, was “Mobile Communication”.

We all know the problem only too well: a work or project group, conference participant or colleagues attend an ad hoc meeting, the emphasis is on getting everyone up to speed quickly – but alas using different information carriers and media. Often, the interaction process is made more difficult as a result of insufficient and inflexible furnishings, along with a jungle of technical equipment. Meeting the requirements of the working environment, which was the key task of the competition, means coming up with ideas to create communication-friendly and media-compatible conference rooms and flexible workstations.

Approximately one hundred students from the institutes in Milan, Turin, Madrid and Barcelona took part in the competition. After a preselection process conducted by lecturers at these institutes, 22 entries made it through to the final round.

The jury, made up of Aldo Colonnetti, Director of Studies at the IED (European Design Institute), Renata Sias, editor of the magazine Ufficio Stile, as well as Klaus-Peter Grasse, Development Manager at Sedus and Cornelia Scharnagl, Sedus Product Manager, awarded three prizes and two recognitions.

The 1st prize was awarded to Caroline Moncada from the IED in Madrid for her entry “AXIS”. The concept of her design is a workstation with revolving desk parts to convert it from an individual to a group workstation, according to requirement.

The 2nd prize went to Nuria Parrado, also from the IED in Madrid. Her entry “ESPACIO” presents a conference situation in a rotunda, with revolving wall elements and integrated presentation and projection surfaces.

The 3rd prize was awarded to the work group from Milan made up of Alice Andreoli, Gerdur Steinarsdottir and Claire Dresseno. Their design “FEEL FREE” combines a workstation and a conference solution in one. Rotating visual and acoustic screens help transform the work environment.

In 4th place came Edoardo Melchiori from Turin with his design “GENESIS”, for which he received a recognition. His design consisted of a distinctive conference table with a computer screen/touchscreen desk top, which serves as an information carrier. Seating elements made of polyurethane can be taken out from the centre of the table, like slices from a cake. The technical connection is located in the base of the table.

In 5th place, and therefore also worthy of a recognition, came David Liberal from Madrid with his entry “TATAME”. With wall panels and filigree recliners, he designed a modular system for the configuration of conference rooms. The recliners allow for a relaxed posture and communication units are built into the wall.

The winning entries will be on show in a small exhibition.
